I never could understand in my 4th grade math class and my 5th grade math class why the teachers seemed to think that girls weren’t any good at math. Maybe they were just of the “older generation” that thought that boys were good in math but bad in language skills and that girls were the opposite. I was just as good at adding fractions at the chalk board than anyone else in the class. I’ve often wondered if girls aren’t good at math, then why are most of the math teachers women?
In college I got straight A’s in all of the math classes that the college had to offer. I was the highest scoring student in all of the classes. The other students used to tell me that I must be good at it because I liked it. No, I never liked it. But I do enjoy solving puzzles. Maybe that’s the important part. I think that perhaps the approach to teaching should be altered – math could be made much more fun to learn than it is.
