Have you ever noticed at the parties that you go to that the men gather at one end of the party area and the women gather on the other? What is up with that? One of the things that I try to do at a casual party is to integrate the men and the women, but it just doesn’t happen very well. The other day I went to an Elks meeting with my husband. It was supposed to be a pizza party. When we arrived, I helped to set up the tables and chairs and I put my purse down on one of the chairs at one of the tables. When everyone sat down, I noticed that it was all the men at one table, and all of the women at the other table!

To be perfectly honest, I was feeling snubbed by the women at the meeting, so I tried to listen to the men’s conversation, thinking that I could participate in some of that chatter. But all they seemed to be talking about was sports, or cars. I could hear that one of them was trading in his dodge ram but couldn’t make up his mind between a chrysler 300 or a suzuki kizashi . Another guy was talking about buying a new infiniti ex as a graduation gift for his daughter that had just graduated college. Must be nice to have enough money to buy your kid a brand new car like that! I’ve been driving around a 1996 Chevy because money is tight, and these guys are talking about buying new cars. Why can’t men get more excited about fixing up their houses?

Last night my hubby and I went to eat dinner at the local Ruby Tuesday. I tried the new appetizer, Boston Barbecue chicken wings. It is served with ranch dressing and celery. Well, I didn’t eat the celery – I read an article recently about secrets waitresses won’t tell you, and it said that at least ten people handle the lemons and the celery sticks, so I don’t go near them with my mouth!

But I loved the chicken wings – they were delicious! I’ve spent at least an hour today looking on the Internet for the recipe to that barbecue sauce. Can’t find it! If you find it, please send it my way! I’d love to have it!

One of the things that I find most telling about the economy is how many homes have signposts in their yards that advertise that they use some kind of home security system to deter burglars. As more and more people are losing their jobs and falling off of the unemployment benefits roster, more and more people will be turning to desperate measures.

I can remember just a few years back no one in this neighborhood even locked their doors at night, or when leaving the house! People felt very safe around here. But I’ve been hearing recently that a few houses a couple of blocks away were broken into over the past couple of weeks, and just last night by neighbor told me that someone appears to have been in their house over last weekend when they went away to visit their relatives in Ohio.

They said that it does not look like anyone stole anything, but things were rearranged and food was eaten from their pantry and refrigerator. And beds had been slept in. I have to wonder if it was maybe some neighborhood kids that were just taking advantage of a temporarily vacant house to have some private romance time! I’m glad that nothing was stolen, but I’m sure that it would creep me out if I came home and found that someone had been in the house. Who knows what they might have gone through? How could I tell if a couple of pieces of jewelry were missing?

My hubby asked me to try and find a consumer reports article about what are the best security systems and services to use. I think he is concerned that someone might break into our house and steal some of his NASCAR collectibles! When I got up this morning I saw his laptop computer was on the http://www.broadviewsecurity.com/webpage. So I guess he’s really serious about looking into a system!

I can’t believe that I let such a pile build up in my bedroom of junk, like old newspapers, magazines, the local yellowpages, old expired coupons and the like. I’m glad though that I do recycle and that all of these are paper products that can be recycled when I go into the part of town that has the recycling containers for us all to use.

These days if I want to do local search for someone or some place all I have to do is go online to sites like local.com and I can find the local restaurants, pet stores, shoe stores, auto repair, etc with just a few clicks on my keyboard, so who needs the paper version of the phone book these days. Of course if you are still in the dark ages and don’t have Internet access you would still rely on the paper version, I just hope that when you are done with them that you would have the common sense and the decency to recycle them, just like I’m planning on doing. We all need to do what we can in order to be a “green” as possible these days and recycling is a big part of becoming “green” in today’s crazy world.

My hubby and I have always enjoyed watching the birds in our backyard. I can remember one year we video taped an owl that was perched on our bird feeder – he was there for a good ten minutes or more, hunting mice.

We especially get excited when we see a bluebird; we don’t see them very often! My hubby has been talking about trying to take pictures of them, but by the time he gets his digital camera, they’ve flown off! I recently came across a website that sells special bird cameras. I’ve never heard of them before, but I was intrigued. These are special wireless bird cameras just for taking pictures of birds! They are weatherproof, have motion detectors, and one even has a flash feature for night time photos!

The cameras were more affordable than I would have expected! I just might break down and buy my hubby a bird camera for his next birthday. I think he’d be really excited to get a gift like that! No more groans of disappointment when the bird has flown away!

I was just finished reading my email, and getting ready to shut down the computer for the night when I read an article that popped up on my screen about how the antidote for deadly coral snake bites is no longer being produced in the USA, and the current lot is expiring. Apparently the drug companies were not making enough of a profit, so they stopped manufacturing the antidote. I think that says a lot about the drug companies; more interested in making a profit than in saving lives. Shame on them!

Who else could portray the teen drama of the 80’s better than Molly Ringwald? The truth is, no one. I adore watching 80’s movies on demand on my direcTV, because they are so dramatic and funny. I also love that whenever I turn the television on, there is always an 80’s film to watch. Whether it is The Breakfast Club or “16 Candles,” I can always be assured that one of my favorite 80’s films will be on television.

“The Breakfast Club” depicts the lives of give teenagers caught in detention. The way these teens come to bond with one another, while being trapped in confinement, is hilarious. The kids all try to play pranks on the mean principal, and each kid has a distinctive personality. There is the sports jock that is pressured into playing sports by his father. There is the punk kid who probably never will graduate from high school. There is the girl with a compulsive lying problem. There is the immature nerd with a brilliant mind. And then there is the princess who gets everything, played by Molly Ringwald. As the movie goes on, it shows how the teens open up with each other and come to understand one another.

Overall, “The Breakfast Club” is my favorite 80’s film for the honest approach to adolescence that it unashamedly takes.

For about the past two months I’ve been buying a lot of strawberries at the grocery store. They seem to be relatively inexpensive, and I’ve really been enjoying slicing up several and putting them on top of my morning cereal. I’ve noticed that since I’ve been doing that, I don’t get as hungry as quickly as I do if I only have the cereal. That rather surprises me because I always felt that in order for a breakfast to stick to my ribs I needed to add protein. And I don’t think that there is any protein in strawberries! But from what I’ve read, strawberries are one of the “super foods” and knowing that I’m eating something that I really like that is good for me too, well…. That’s a great thing!

I’ve noticed when I go out to town that there are a lot of people doing their errands while wearing scrubs of some kind. I often wonder why these people are out in public wearing them. I thought that medical scrubs and nursing scrubs were clothing items that were supposed to be worn in a hospital or doctor’s office. By that I mean that someone would wear street clothes from their house to work, and then change into the scrubs after they arrived at work. I guess that is a thing of the past, though, because nowadays I see scrubs for sale at the big box department stores.

It just seems to me that when I was younger, the only people that I ever saw wearing scrubs had the name of the institution right on the scrubs. So it would make sense that people would not take them home as they could be considered theft. I guess the businesses now don’t want to supply the scrubs to their employees and are making them buy their own. As such it would make more sense to see more of them being worn out on the street. I still think it’s strange, though.
