It looks as if the same birds that built a nest in our garage last summer have returned to build another nest this year. That is most annoying to me because I don’t like leaving the garage door open all of the time. But I don’t want to prevent the birds from reaching their nest, either. Last year we tried to keep removing the nest before it got big enough for eggs, but it didn’t work. I haven’t looked for the nest this year; I think I’ll ask my hubby to look around for it. I don’t want to be keeping the door open if there is no nest.

Today I decided to try a new recipe in my bread machine. It included oats, wheat flour, and overripe bananas. I had three overripe bananas and I didn’t feel like making my usual (but yummy) banana bread, so I looked in my bread machine cookbook and found the recipe. I measured and poured, and started the machine. It started its mixing cycle, and I decided to take a nap. When I woke up I realized that the bread should be ready. I went into the kitchen and saw that the machine had finished it’s baking cycle. Unfortunately, the machine had decided to break down during the early stage of the mixing cycle so I did not have anything that even resembled bread! Naturally I’m displeased that the machine has broken down – I don’t want to have to buy a new one! Very disaapointing. I’m just glad that it didn’t break down right before a fancy special dinner!

I’ve already got my eye on what machine I want to get to replace it, but I can’t afford it – I need to buy the dogs their flea & tick prevention medicine instead. GRRRRR….

Well I picked the cat up from the vet today to bring him home. He was so glad to see me, he purred like crazy. He didn’t even cry in the car like he usually does. He just purred and purred.

When we got home the first thing he tried to do was to jump up on the bed, but he couldn’t manage it. It was one of his back legs that got amputated, and it will take a few days for him to learn how to manage with only three legs. I picked him up and placed him gently on the bed. He looks so pitiful, it is hard to keep from crying when I look at him.

I was so happy to see our cat came back! I opened the door, and he ran inside the house and jumped up on my bed. I went to see him, and to pat him and scold him for being away so long. That was when I noticed that one of his paws was swollen up larger than my fist! I rushed him to the vet, who said that he apparently had been caught in some kind of animal leg-hold trap. I didn’t even know it was trapping season! The vet says that he has to amputate his leg, since gangrene had already set in. He will be keeping the cat at his place for a couple of days. I am so upset!

If you don’t have any resolutions for the New Year, may I suggest one? That you resolve to consider adopting a pet from an animal shelter if you can afford a pet and give it a good loving home. Many people buy pets from pet stores, or breeders because they want a purebred puppy. I don’t want to cost any purebred breeders any money, but I’d like to see these abandoned pets at the shelters find good homes! If you can’t afford or want to adopt a pet, then how about donating your used newspapers, and old bath towels to your local shelter? They can always use them for animal bedding in the shelters!

I hope you have a wonderful New Year!

We don’t want to turn ”Extra” over to the animal shelter because we heard that so many of the animals are being “put down” now because the shelters are really over crowded from a huge excess of abandoned animals. They say that because the economy is so bad that many owners are no longer able to care for their animals and are turning them into the animal shelters. The animal shelters can’t find homes for them all, and are too crowded. They say that about half of the pets are being put down now! That’s really a shame, and we don’t want that to happen to “Extra” or her pups. So I guess we’ll be keeping her here to keep her safe. There’s a reason she showed up on our property; we will wait and see what happens.

It is going to be a fun Christmas this year, with a house full of family, and dealing with week old puppies! The puppies are still too young to play with, but they are fun to look at. We make sure to pick them all up several times a day to get them used to being handled. The mama dog is doing fine. We’ve decided to call her “Extra” because we have no idea what her real name is, and she has become an extra mouth to feed. She is a sweetheart and seems to appreciate the fact that we are being nice to her. Thank goodness she is housebroken, but does not seem to have been trained in any obedience commands. So that is something we will have to work on if she is going to stay here.
