Have you ever noticed at the parties that you go to that the men gather at one end of the party area and the women gather on the other? What is up with that? One of the things that I try to do at a casual party is to integrate the men and the women, but it just doesn’t happen very well. The other day I went to an Elks meeting with my husband. It was supposed to be a pizza party. When we arrived, I helped to set up the tables and chairs and I put my purse down on one of the chairs at one of the tables. When everyone sat down, I noticed that it was all the men at one table, and all of the women at the other table!

To be perfectly honest, I was feeling snubbed by the women at the meeting, so I tried to listen to the men’s conversation, thinking that I could participate in some of that chatter. But all they seemed to be talking about was sports, or cars. I could hear that one of them was trading in his dodge ram but couldn’t make up his mind between a chrysler 300 or a suzuki kizashi . Another guy was talking about buying a new infiniti ex as a graduation gift for his daughter that had just graduated college. Must be nice to have enough money to buy your kid a brand new car like that! I’ve been driving around a 1996 Chevy because money is tight, and these guys are talking about buying new cars. Why can’t men get more excited about fixing up their houses?

One of the things that I find most telling about the economy is how many homes have signposts in their yards that advertise that they use some kind of home security system to deter burglars. As more and more people are losing their jobs and falling off of the unemployment benefits roster, more and more people will be turning to desperate measures.

I can remember just a few years back no one in this neighborhood even locked their doors at night, or when leaving the house! People felt very safe around here. But I’ve been hearing recently that a few houses a couple of blocks away were broken into over the past couple of weeks, and just last night by neighbor told me that someone appears to have been in their house over last weekend when they went away to visit their relatives in Ohio.

They said that it does not look like anyone stole anything, but things were rearranged and food was eaten from their pantry and refrigerator. And beds had been slept in. I have to wonder if it was maybe some neighborhood kids that were just taking advantage of a temporarily vacant house to have some private romance time! I’m glad that nothing was stolen, but I’m sure that it would creep me out if I came home and found that someone had been in the house. Who knows what they might have gone through? How could I tell if a couple of pieces of jewelry were missing?

My hubby asked me to try and find a consumer reports article about what are the best security systems and services to use. I think he is concerned that someone might break into our house and steal some of his NASCAR collectibles! When I got up this morning I saw his laptop computer was on the http://www.broadviewsecurity.com/webpage. So I guess he’s really serious about looking into a system!

I can’t believe that I let such a pile build up in my bedroom of junk, like old newspapers, magazines, the local yellowpages, old expired coupons and the like. I’m glad though that I do recycle and that all of these are paper products that can be recycled when I go into the part of town that has the recycling containers for us all to use.

These days if I want to do local search for someone or some place all I have to do is go online to sites like local.com and I can find the local restaurants, pet stores, shoe stores, auto repair, etc with just a few clicks on my keyboard, so who needs the paper version of the phone book these days. Of course if you are still in the dark ages and don’t have Internet access you would still rely on the paper version, I just hope that when you are done with them that you would have the common sense and the decency to recycle them, just like I’m planning on doing. We all need to do what we can in order to be a “green” as possible these days and recycling is a big part of becoming “green” in today’s crazy world.

We especially get excited when we see a bluebird; we don’t see them very often! My hubby has been talking about trying to take pictures of them, but by the time he gets his digital camera, they’ve flown off! I recently came across a website that sells special bird cameras. I’ve never heard of them before, but I was intrigued. These are special wireless bird cameras just for taking pictures of birds! They are weatherproof, have motion detectors, and one even has a flash feature for night time photos!

The cameras were more affordable than I would have expected! I just might break down and buy my hubby a bird camera for his next birthday. I think he’d be really excited to get a gift like that! No more groans of disappointment when the bird has flown away!

I’ve noticed when I go out to town that there are a lot of people doing their errands while wearing scrubs of some kind. I often wonder why these people are out in public wearing them. I thought that medical scrubs and nursing scrubs were clothing items that were supposed to be worn in a hospital or doctor’s office. By that I mean that someone would wear street clothes from their house to work, and then change into the scrubs after they arrived at work. I guess that is a thing of the past, though, because nowadays I see scrubs for sale at the big box department stores.

It just seems to me that when I was younger, the only people that I ever saw wearing scrubs had the name of the institution right on the scrubs. So it would make sense that people would not take them home as they could be considered theft. I guess the businesses now don’t want to supply the scrubs to their employees and are making them buy their own. As such it would make more sense to see more of them being worn out on the street. I still think it’s strange, though.

It is good to see that rain barrels are coming back in style. These rain water barrels help in so many ways and with so much emphasise on going and becoming as “Green” as possible, rain harvestings is a wonderful concept. We are now hearing that we are entering a drought and the restrictions are going to be put into place real soon. That really sucks but I know that it is necessary if we want to have water all summer long. I can’t imagine summer time without any water activities to keep cool with.

You can find plenty of nice rain barrels for sale on the Internet if you can’t find them locally. They have some wonderful styles of rain barrels to offer for today’s consumers. Not just the old wooden type of rain barrel that we grew up seeing from time to time. If we all try and harvest the precious and few rain drops that we are getting it could make a big difference all the way around for many folks.

A few years ago my mother-in-law decided to buy some new tiles from a local home improvement store to use as a back-splash all around her kitchen. She asked me to paint strawberries on them, to coordinate with her wallpaper.

That was my very first time painting on tiles! I used Folk Art Enamels paints, and used the One Stroke method of painting. When I gave them to my mother-in-law, she was thrilled to death! It would be very easy to glue some felt and ribbons to something like that to make a pretty gift!

I’ve had bad vericose veins since I was in my teens, back in the 70’s. Would you believe that I had the veins stripped from my left leg when I was only 17? I regret having that done at such an early age. I should have waited until after I had finished my childbearing years. Be that as it may, I now find it necessary to wear compression hosiery. I have worn them for at least the past 23 years! So I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the subject.

I feel that buying the custom made for you hosiery a waste of money. I tried that once – I had to get a prescription for them and go to a pharmacy where they took my measurements. They sent away for the stockings. When they arrived they weren’t the right size, my insurance refused to pay for it, and the pharmacy said that once I opened the package that they were not returnable. So I was out over $100 for a pair of hosiery that I couldn’t ever wear!

Now I buy my compression hosiery online at Amazon.com. They have the best price, and you can buy the size you need without having to be professionally measured. And they cost a lot less than $100 a pair! With proper care, each pair can last several years, so they are worth their weight in gold to me!

This was written by guest blogger Molly Naylor

Swiffer Wet Jet has a really cute and fun commercial that I love to see each and every time it comes on the television. For some reason I seem to see the commercial more often when I am at home on our Best Choice TV, but wherever I see it, I like it just the same!

In this commercial it shows a woman who has replaced her mop with a new Swiffer Wet Jet. The mop is heartbroken and devastated, with the “Baby Come Back” song playing in the background, it will do whatever it can to make its way back into the hands of its owner who threw it out for the Swiffer.

The mop is shown in the background, looking like a sad, lost little mop. It even makes a desperate attempt to win her heart over with flowers. The mop is torn apart as she dumps the flowers in the garbage, and forever ends their relationship. It is enough to make tears form in your eyes as you watch the sad little fellow.

This commercial is so funny! It drew me in well, and I was even convinved to try a Swiffer myself! I hope there are more of these cute commercials to come!

My brother keeps pressuring me to buy a new computer every two years. He’s really involved in computers, he makes his living as the IT technician. He is self-employed and has several clients that keep him busy. He enjoys helping them to buy Custom Computers and setting them up. I have to admire how well he has done for himself. But I digress. I’ve never been one to want to buy a new computer very often. In fact I tend to want to add memory and storage instead of buying new. Part of the reason for that is I never can get rid of the old computers! No one wants to take them!

He has been after me for a year now to order a Custom Computer myself. He wants me to buy a second monitor. He says he has two monitors at home. To be perfectly honest, I don’t know if I would have a use for a second monitor; and I sure don’t think I have the room! Besides, I think I have a few old monitors taking up space in my basement!

I would, however, be interested in looking at some Custom Laptops to see what they might have to offer me. Seems to me that I’m the only one in my family that doesn’t have my very own laptop! I don’t know if a Custom Laptop would save me money or not, but I think I would look into one; I can’t see the logic behind getting one that has a lot of stuff on it that I don’t need.
