Ever since we heard that Josie was accepted to the University of Alabama, we’ve been planning to throw a farewell party for her in August. Josie is the first person in her family to attend college, so it is a really big deal for all of us. For the most part her family has been in the blue collar trades; carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and bricklayers, but Josie has always been interested in finding ways to use her body less and her mind more. As Uncle Rob likes to say “You can work smart, or you can work hard” and Josie wants to work smart.

When asked what profession Josie is interested in pursuing, she replies that she really hasn’t made up her mind yet, but since her best friend and her boy friend are all going to the University of Alabama that is where she wanted to go as well. Besides, she has relatives nearby that she plans to stay with, which will give her a break on the cost of going there.

So we have been shopping for University of Alabama shirts and jackets, and other Alabama apparel for us to wear to her farewell party to show our love and support to her as she starts her new adventure in life. This is so exciting!

Coming from a family of horse lovers I really love the idea of the Habitat for Horses site that I just recently found online. Check out this video on the habitatforhorses.org website.

My 11 year old niece is interested in starting in on some horseback riding lessons over the summer so I have started to look around for some items she will need in order to get started, like some footwear for riding horses in case a horse stomps on her foot and of course she will need to buy breeches to wear in order to protect her legs as well. Too many times I got off a horse and couldn’t walk for days due to not wearing the right clothing that you are supposed to wear. Riding horses isn’t cheap, there is a lot involved, but I’m willing to help as much as I can, in fact I think I have some stuff down in the basement that she might be able to use as well. I just hope they are all dry rotted from age, it’s been a while, sigh……

I have always been a shoe freak. I used to drive my parents crazy with all the money that I spent on shoes and all of the shoes that I would come home with whenever I could. My closet was seriously over flowing with womens shoes and boots by the time I was ready to leave after graduating high school and it took over 5 moving boxes to pack them all up and take along.

Now that you can buy womens and men’s shoes over the Internet it has made it much easier to collect even more shoes than ever and I can’t imagine how many boxes it would take these days to pack them all up and move. Hope I don’t have to find out any time soon, just the thought of moving gives me a stomach ache. Way too much work involved in all that it takes to relocate with all the stuff (not just the shoes mind you) that I’ve collected through out the years.

Guest post by Gerard Mcdaniel

When my sister moved to New York, I was so excited to have her nearby. We have not lived close to each other in a long time. Even though we are sisters, we grew up being the best of friends. I feel sorry for people that do not have any siblings. You miss out on so much if you don’t have someone to share everything with. And after you lose your parents, it is always good to have someone that can remember the good old days when you were growing up. My sister’s house is only a few miles from mine. When she was moving in she needed to save as much money as possible because she lives on a limited income. I told her to go to NY natural gas to find a good deal on her natural gas. These days everyone has to try to save as much money as they can on all expenses. Then I had to show my sister the best places to shop for groceries, the best mall to go to for buying clothes, and a lot of other places. I want to help her as much as I can so she will be happy living here. We have spent a lot of time apart, and I don’t want her to ever move again.

Last night my hubby and I went through the Wendy’s drive through to pick up some food to bring home for supper. I ordered one of the apple and pecan chicken salads (which is my favorite) and my hubby ordered a chicken sandwich and a vanilla milk shake. I also ordered one of those baby Frosty drinks that you can get for free if you bought the customer loyalty key tag at the end of last year.

Driving home my husband offered me a taste of his vanilla shake, telling me to get ready for a “sugar rush.” Well, normally I am a big fan of vanilla milk shakes, but let me tell you this milk shake was really nasty! I don’t know what they had done wrong, but it was so awful that I started to gag! My hubby thought it was really funny that I disliked it so much, and said that when we got home he was going to have to dilute it with a lot of milk. I think that the next time I order a vanilla milk shake there I will taste it before I leave! I would have gone back to the counter and told them it was nasty and to give me something different!

All kinds of Social Networks are popping up, they appear to be the newest and most interesting way that people can communicate with each other and make a statement while doing it, much like the days of the C.B. radio, which by the way were a blast. I still remember my “handle” and my call letters, after all these years.

Anyway there is a new Fashion Social Network that I had read about and then today at work one of gals was chatting it up at lunch about Fashion Bloggers and their fashion community which turned out to be the one and the same Styledon.com that I was reading about. Obviously I’m into blogging and fashion is important, so tonight I decided to take a few minutes and check it out, which I did and I have to say that it is a pretty cool concept. It is all about fashions, in a very broad sense and is very user friendly with awesome pictures with brilliant colors which is so much nicer to look at then other well known Social Networks. A pretty cool site if you are into that type of thing.

Back when we were kids, Route 66 was threatening to cut our neighborhood in half and was something that only the grown ups talked about due to all of the hard feelings that came along with the idea of having such a super highway run smack through our town. This last part of the well known Route 66 that was being planned really had an impact on so many people and when it finally did arrive it put a lot of companies out of business, but thank goodness the opposite happened to our family and my step father made out quite well and as soon as the check arrived in the mail he up and moved the whole family to the next county, which made a life long fan of route 66 out of my step father.

So in my quest to find him a good birthday present this year I have managed to find a really nice looking framed poster by KC Haxton of a cool classic car with the famous Route 66 Road Sign in front of it at the Z Galleries website that is known for the chic furniture and decorative accessories.

With my father’s birthday coming up in just a few short weeks, I really need to buckle down and find something that I feel good about giving to him without having to spend a large amount of money on. It is always a challenge trying to find and buy something for my dad with all of the gift giving occasions that come about throughout the year no matter what. Men in general are hard for me to buy for, especially when they are in their senior years and have had a long life to buy all the things that they need and want and really don’t need or want anything at this point in their life. At least nothing that someone like me can afford to buy for them.

I’ve asked my mother for some ideas and the only she can come up with are some clothing items for him. He has been losing weight these past couple of years so some new clothes that actually fit him now would be a good idea, so I’m looking for some Big and tall Clothing websites to see what is out there for someone his age and size. Some new would be good as well, he has always enjoyed wearing Levis Jeans, but I really don’t like buying clothes for someone unless they can try them on first, but that isn’t going to happen so I need to find a company online that offers easy returns and won’t charge me an arm and a leg with their delivery charges.

Since we are expecting snow tomorrow I think that I will stay inside and spend a good part of the day on my computer and finding him some good clothes for his birthday will be first on the list to do and then move on to other more exciting things to do online. The first place that I’m going to start looking at is at Gandlclothing.com, I’ve used them before and have been happy with their products for my use, not too sure what they have for men though, but their prices are goo and they have good customer service policies that are so very important to me both online as well as in the real world of retail.

The biggest issue that I have with buying clothes online or through catalogs is the trouble I seem to have with the size charts. Even though I take my measurements before I order the item, many times when I receive what I have ordered the garment simply does not fit. I can remember a long time (more than twenty years) ago ordering something from the Spiegel catalog and it was too big. The catalog did not have a size chart in it at all, so I ordered what size I normally bought at the local department store. I ended up returning and exchanging the dress four times before finally giving up completely. Since they would not refund the shipping charges, and I had to pay for shipping both ways I ended up paying a fortune in shipping and never did end up with the dress! When I called the company to ask them for sizing help on the dress the representative that I spoke with was very snooty and did not help me at all. If I recall correctly I have not bought anything from Spiegel since then. I wonder if they include a size chart now.

Jane was telling me that Justin has finally decided to accept the scholarship offer at the University of Alabama. That’s the university that his father attended, so they are very proud and happy that he has made that decision. Now they are going to be planning a big farewell bash to be held right before he leaves for school later this year. They are inviting a lot of friends and family and are reserving the community center’s biggest function room for the big party.

Sounds as if they are going to be going all-out with this celebration; catering will be done by Jane’s sister Elise. The food will not be an entire supper, though, it is more of a snacks, cake and beverages type of party. Elise has been in the catering business for years, and she makes some really beautiful cakes. They are going to hire a professional DJ to play music so all of the guests will be able to dance the night away.

Jane and I went online to look for inexpensive Alabama apparel to buy to use as going-away for Justin. She decided to order four short sleeved University of Alabama shirts; three for Justin and one for his father to wear at home.
