I’ve always been a firm believer that nothing good has come out of Texas. But I do have a close friend that moved to Dallas TX a few years back and she seems to be doing well down there. We keep in touch via weekly emails and I always enjoy hearing from her, she always had a way with words.

She is a treasure hunter and has gotten pretty good at it lately. It seems that she has been hitting the pawn shops that are abundant in Texas. One of her local Dallas Pawn Shops has become one of her favorite stops when she goes into town and she has become very friendly with the owner, which is cool. We could all use as many friends as we can possibly acquire these days.

She is totally into vintage jewelery and there seems to be a lot of people pawning their vintage jewelry in order to get cash to help pay the bills in today’s troubled economy. It is a buyer’s market, if you have the money. She has even ventured out to some of the other Austin Pawn Shops in her attempt to find her treasures that put a smile on her face. It’s all about the hunt and I say go for it girl!

Thankfully I have no food allergies. But others in the family are not so lucky. My niece is having a terrible time with IBS and I’m beginning to think that it has to do with a food allergy. We are trying to keep track of what she eats and when she has the IBS attacks to see if there is any pattern. At the moment, I am concerned that she might be allergic to eggs. That would be really tough to eliminate from her diet. I hope it turns out to be something else.

I’m sorry to say that there are a lot of addictive personalities in my family. In each generation that I’ve known, it seems that most of the people are addicted to SOMETHING! Some of them have gone to some form of Alcohol Rehab program. Depending on their financial circumstances, some have gone to a Private Alcohol Rehab, others have simply tried to stop on their own, and still others have gone to free programs.

Although the results of going to rehab were that the person involved did stop drinking, their basic personality and method of coping have not changed very much. Some of them act like “dry drunks” which can be discouraging. Still others throw themselves into a different addiction of sorts. Whether or not that other addiction is a good one or a bad one is arguable! The addiction still consumes them in one way or another. I wish that there was better counseling available to these people to help them to heal what is troubling them so that they don’t feel the need to block out the pain by throwing themselves into something to escape the pain!

Mesothelioma Cancer seems to be a popular topic of legal commercials lately. I don’t normally watch a lot of television, but I have noticed that almost every time I do watch a show there is at least one commercial that comes on from a law firm that is reaching out to people who either have or lost a loved one due to Mesothelioma and offering assistance for them to sue places for it.

To be perfectly honest I don’t personally know anyone (that I am aware of!) that has that form of cancer. But I have lost several close friends and relatives to a variety of cancers, and it is heartbreaking to watch them go through radiation and chemo and end up dying anyway. I think that anyplace that mines or sells asbestos should stop immediately and make reparations.

I am glad, however, that science has found out that asbestos does cause it, and that companies are making an effort to control and contain it, to minimize the possibility of exposure to the general public. That is nothing to be ignored!

The interesting news story of the day seems to be about the air traffic controller at JFK letting his kid talk to the pilots. Both the employee and the supervisor have been suspended over this. I understand why so many people are upset over this, but don’t you think a little bit of retraining might be in order here? Seems to me that the kid was just repeating what he was told to say, and adults were right there to correct the situation if the wrong directions were given out. I think suspension of the employees involved is a little bit harsher than necessary. Now to be honest, I don’t know if there are any written rules and regulations that were violated or not. But I think that retraining, not suspension, is a better course of action to take.

Many years ago I bought AAA insurance. I always thought it was a great investment. If I ran out of gas, got a flat tire, needed a jump start, or locked my keys in the car, they were there for me. And I LOVE their Trip-Tiks! Even so, they do not take care of all of the needs that I have as a driver. The other day I called them because my starter had died and I needed a tow. It was then that I discovered that they would only tow my car for three miles for free, and the rest would be $5.00 per mile!

Well, out where I live, three miles is just spitting distance! I was really glad that I had towing coverage on my car insurance policy! That coverage covers towing for a lot further. I was surprised a few weeks ago when my sister told me that doesn’t have emergency road service on any kind of auto insurance plan. She said that she told her agent that she needed really cheap car insurance and to give her the bare minimum required by law. That really disappointed me to hear that; usually really cheap auto insurance leaves out something really important. So folks, please do your research and make sure you are getting everything you need on your policy!

I’ve subscribed to several women’s magazines for years. I recently cancelled several of the subscriptions because I noticed that the magazines seem to be re-running the same stories over and over again. The advice they hand out about how to do this or that is the same advice that they handed out every six months for several years. Well, OK, maybe not every six months, maybe every twelve months. But the point is that there is rarely anything new in the magazines other than new ads for products. The articles seem to be the same articles over and over again. Seems like a waste of money to keep buying them!

In this challenging economic environment, more and more people are losing their jobs. Looking for a new job is really difficult. Most businesses are trimming their workforce, not expanding it! That’s why a lot of people are looking into starting their own business. One of the biggest challenges in starting up a small business is how to go about raising money for a small business.

The National Institute of Small Business Grants and SCORE are two of the few non-profit organizations that are set up to assist the new entrepreneur with the tools that they need to get their business up and running. They can help with good advice about setting up and running a business, how to find and apply for business grants, and even how to write a business plan. The great thing about grants is that they don’t have to be repaid! I’d much rather have a grant than a loan, wouldn’t you?

I’m glad that there are organizations available to help the small businessman out there. The marketplace is a very challenging one, and the entrepreneur needs all the help he/she can get!
